Pre-Columbian Nayarit San Sebastián Type Seated Female Figure (#18-024)

This fine pre-Columbian pottery figure comes from the West Mexican state of Nayarit, and is of a type called San Sebastián red. The female figure is modeled from orange-red clay, and is seated facing forward with her hands on her stomach. The hair is unburnished and indicated by incised lines, as is typical of the style, while the remainder of the body is burnished. The figure wears multiple earrings in each ear and has a great deal of presence. It is hollow with an opening at the top of the head. THe piece is in wonderful condition with no damage or repairs, and has some light encrustations and manganese deposits.
