Fine Old Quechua Woven Ceremonial Sash ‘Chumpi’ from Peru (#18-108)

This beautiful woven ceremonial sash or ‘chumpi’ was made by Quechua weavers in Peru. It is finely woven from wool with geometric and floral patterns, female figures, and llamas. It is woven primarily in earthtone colors including tan, orange, blue, burgandy, and red. The central pink stripe that runs down the middle of the sash through the design elements is a traditional attribute. One end of the belt terminates in four braided strips, and each end has a thin woven tie. Chumpi belts with figural designs of people and animals have grown increasingly rare, and I suspect this belt is around 40-60 years old.
