Antique Chinese Silver Hexagonal Box (#18-008)


A fine antique Chinese silver hexagonal box, with fine repouss√© work depicting auspicious plants, animals, and mythical creatures. The lid has a central medallion with a ‘shou’ or longevity character, flanked by a flying dragon and phoenix amidst clouds. The six sides depict various auspicious symbols including: pine, a Qilin, prunus blossoms, a tortoise and lotus blossom, bamboo, and another type of flower. The plants and creatures are highly detailed and rendered in a very charming manner. The bottom of the box bears a Chinese hallmark. A very fine little box, with a great deal of cultural symbolism.
